What Is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a Medicare initiative that helps eligible children aged 0 -17 years access basic dental care at little or no cost.
Each eligible child can claim up to $1,132 in benefits over two calendar years for common dental services, including:
- Routine check-ups and examinations
- Teeth cleaning and preventive care
- X-rays to detect early issues
- Fissure sealants to protect new teeth
- General restorative treatments such as fillings

How to Check if Your Child Is Eligible
Eligibility is determined by the Department of Human Services and is usually reviewed each year. Your child may be eligible if:
- They are aged 2 to 17 years, and
- They or their guardian receive an eligible Australian Government payment, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A, Parenting Payment, or similar support.
You’ll usually receive a letter or notification from Medicare if your child qualifies or you can check through myGov → Medicare → Child Dental Benefits Schedule.
Does the Benefit Expire?
Yes, but it’s flexible. The $1,132 benefit limit applies over a two-year period.
If the full amount isn’t used in the first year, the balance carries over to the second year as long as your child remains eligible.
